In this video (on the top), I have tried to convey my message to all of the new Civil Services aspirants who find themselves in a very confused situation from where to start the IAS preparation. Which books should they prefer to and stuff like that! Before buying a bunch of books, you must grab two things in fact that are – Syllabus and Previous Year Papers. You will get a broad idea what to read and what you have to ignore. Civil Services’s syllabus is considered to be very vast like universe…anything can be asked from any of the sources. But it is not so! the fact is something different actually.
Role of UPSC Syllabus
Many of you do not know that medieval and modern History are not a part of UPSC Main’s syllabus of General Studies Paper – 1. Is not it? On the other hand, you have to read about med and modern history in Prelims level. So it is a high chance that you will waste your time studying medieval and modern history after clearing your prelims. There are a number of minor things you must notice before appearing for IAS exam. My advice is that to read the syllabus carefully and keep it always with you.
Role of Previous Year Papers
Previous year paper/question set plays a vital role. Give a thorough analysis of at least 10 years previous year papers for both Pre+Mains. Try to know the pattern from where questions are dropping. Are they current affairs related questions? Are questions thrown from basic knowledge? What are the sources? The Hindu, TOI, Yojna, PIB or what else? For that you should have a good internet connection so you can search the relevance of question asked in a particular year.
This a long-term practice that cannot be achieved overnight. I will suggest you to make a separate diary for previous year paper analysis and try to follow the question pattern. Make a graph if you are comfortable with. Have a look how I have analysed UPSC Pre 2016 Questions:– Answerkey

sir , Is their any possibility to succeed preliminary of upsc in 3 months. I am already in coaching of RC Raddy in Hyderabad from 1 month.
Bindu Priya, frankly speaking, 3 months is not sufficient for full preparation of preliminary examination. You have to cover all static topics of core general studies subjects as well as current affairs of one year. So I think, for pre preparation, 6-7 months – more than enough.

Medium is not an issue. Whether you choose English or Hindi or any regional language, it does not matter at all! Just choose medium of language in which you are most comfortable. It would be a great practice to start with basic books like NCERT/NIOS publication books…You can grab these books from any of the local book stores nearby.
